Eligibility

Can I donate blood?

Most healthy adults can. Here are the general guidelines — the medical team always makes the final call on the day.

You can usually donate if…

  • You are generally between 18 and 65 years old
  • You weigh at least 50 kg (110 lbs)
  • You are in good general health and feeling well
  • It has been at least 3 months since your last whole-blood donation
  • You have eaten and are well hydrated before donating

Please check first if…

  • ! You have a cold, flu, or infection today
  • ! You are pregnant, or recently gave birth
  • ! You recently had a tattoo, piercing, or surgery
  • ! You are taking certain medications or antibiotics
  • ! You have a chronic condition — check with the medical team

These guidelines are general and for information only — they are not medical advice. Eligibility is confirmed by the medical staff at the donation site every time you give.

Good to know

Before, during & after

Before

Eat a good meal, drink plenty of water, and get a normal night's sleep. Bring an ID.

During

The donation itself takes about 8–10 minutes. A trained team handles everything with sterile, single-use equipment.

After

Rest a few minutes, have a drink and a snack, and avoid heavy exertion for the rest of the day. You've just helped save a life.
